ABOUT ABOUT

The centerpiece of the Ellis Island restoration project was the construction of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. Covering three floors and 200,000 square feet, the museum tells the poignant story of the immigrants who entered America through the golden door of Ellis Island.

Ellis Island was incorporated as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument on May 11, 1965. Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 12 million steerage and third class steamship passengers who entered the United States through the port of New York were legally and medically inspected at Ellis Island.

The new Statue of Liberty Museum will allow for universal access, giving visitors a meaningful experience and deeper understanding of the Statue of Liberty’s history. In addition, it will create a beautiful, new destination on Liberty Island, have a positive impact on the high-volume pedestrian traffic flow and enhance the overall visitor educational experience.
